I Trust My Boyfriend As Much As I Trust The Government

(Listen to the full poem here.)

Such a charming and handsome man
Tall, bold, athletic, competitive, and tan
Whenever he is in the streets
He’s kissing babies
And shaking hands

But as time drifts by
You’ll soon find
That just like the government
He’s accused in the news
Of cheating and lies

Without hesitation
He will quickly respond to the situation
By gaslighting
Deflection
And manipulation

And just like the government
His needs come first
And has proven that
He really doesn’t care
If it’s me who gets hurt

He turns alliances into enemies
And enemies into alliances
As he shamelessly revels
In dancing with a she-devil

Because he wants everything
He dangles us on strings
And just like the government
He ignores her crimes
Against humanity

He justifies her sins
Claiming she’s done nothing to him
So relentlessly he continues
To test all of my fears

And he selfishly asks
Why should he care
That it breaks me when
I know that she’s near?

And supposedly now
She’s just a friend
But he will do whatever it takes
To make sure that he wins

And just like the government
He’s always saying one thing
Then is doing another
Yet foolishly I find
I’m still his biggest supporter

But in the back of my mind
I remain paranoid
And can’t help but wonder

Yet If I try to pry further
I’m suddenly at fault
And it’s me who becomes
The one that is censored

Countless times I have cried
But as a loyal party member
I willingly choose
To stay by his side
Because apparently, I enjoy
This masochistic ride

Blindingly
I have made him my sun
But when I burn under his warmth
I know we are not done

I brace myself
These battles have just begun
And we will both fight
Until this war has been won

As we continue
To march forward
It’s hard to forget history
So under false protection
I sleep with my frenemy

When we attempt to practice
A bit of diplomacy
We ignore the corruption
Which temporarily relieves
Our own self-destruction

I try to focus
On the positive memories
By moving here
He sacrificed a lot for me
So I try to remember
He can be redeemed

And just like the government
We make promises of change
We promote the good times
And go on a campaign

Even though right now
We are walking through hell
We want to build a bright future
And hope that someday
Our dreams and love will prevail
